Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery
Did you know that there is a fish hatchery near Syracuse that has been raising trout for generations? Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery is located in Elbridge, in Onondaga County, and helps stock local waters with fish. Although it is outside the City of Syracuse, it serves the larger Syracuse-area community by supporting fishing in nearby streams, lakes, and ponds.
At Carpenter’s Brook, workers raise brook, brown, and rainbow trout. The fish begin as eggs inside the hatchery building, where they are kept in clean, cold water. After hatching, the tiny fish grow in indoor troughs before moving outside to larger concrete ponds. The hatchery uses water from wells and springs, which helps give trout the cold, oxygen-rich water they need.
The fish are raised for one to two years before they are released. In the spring, staff members and volunteers stock public waters throughout Onondaga County. These fish give local families, students, and anglers opportunities to enjoy fishing close to home.
Carpenter’s Brook is also different from many hatcheries because it welcomes visitors. People can look into the outdoor ponds, learn about the trout life cycle, and sometimes feed the fish. Fishing programs at the hatchery give beginners a chance to practice catching trout in a supervised setting. This makes the hatchery both a working facility and a place for learning about local wildlife.
