Dr. Xinru Wang is a researcher who works at Upstate Medical University, where she studies ticks and the tiny organisms connected to tick-borne disease. Her research is important because ticks are vectors. A vector is an animal, such as a tick or mosquito, that can carry germs from one place or living thing to another.
Before studying ticks, Dr. Wang researched whiteflies and tomato plants. Whiteflies are small insects that can damage crops and spread plant viruses. Her work helped scientists understand how these insects interact with tomatoes and how their behavior can affect agriculture. When insects spread disease among plants, farmers may lose part of a crop.
Although ticks and whiteflies are very different, both are vectors. Dr. Wang’s research shows why it is important to study the vector itself—not only the disease it may carry.
